The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is dedicated to the celebration and analysis of the strongest aspects of mid- century modernism as reflected in the holdings of the Bechtler collection.
The collection comprises
more than 1,400 works by 20th-century modern artists. Some works are accompanied by books, photographs and letters illustrating personal connections to the Bechtler family.
While visiting the museum, talk with our volunteer docents. They have a passion for aviation and many have extensive aviation backgrounds. Visit the Carolinas Aviation Museum and talk with them about various aircraft we have on display and the role each has played in shaping our history.
Learn about the aircraft and then sit in an actual cockpit to experience what it would have been like to fly them. Bring your camera!
Don't let the strip mall location fool you—this small children's museum delights kids. Emphasizing imagination over high-tech exhibits, it features a construction zone where kids can connect big PVC pipes, a campsite where they crawl in and out of a tent and "cook" food on a grill, and a veterinarian's office that displays pictures of actual adoptable dogs. Local touches like the "NASCAR speedway" for ride-on cars and the mini-Trader Joes (the real one is just a couple miles away) make this a fun spot to visit.
This museum's collection of local artifacts gives a great sense of Charlotte's past, but kids are drawn more to the museum's "backyard." The American Freedom Bell, the largest bell at ground level in America, is a hit with kids, who love feeling its powerful vibrations with their hands. Wooded paths lead to the Hezekiah Alexander House, the oldest house in Mecklenburg County. Costumed docents provide a fascinating glimpse into eighteenth century life—kids love hearing about games and toys, but they are also squeamishly delighted to learn how hides were tanned with the animal's brains.
